It’s a beautiful day here at Cowes, with all the components in place except for the wind. AP over AP is becoming an over-used signal this year, but unlike the earlier occasions of its unveiling there is real hope that an approaching front will eventually bring a decent west or south-westerly breeze for what will mostly likely be afternoon starts.

According to the ‘nowcasts’ and 2hr forecasts on www.ybw.com/weather, drawn from the Met Office super computer, the wind will start to pick up a little within the next two hours although still initially out of the north and that is consistent with reports from the water. There is a 38 per cent chance of rain within two hours, although the cloud is currently broken and the land is heating up nicely.

The Etchells should get procedings underway at 1210 with every other class in sequence.

Yachting World’s Sue Pelling is sailing in the Britannia Cup today aboard Volvo for Life, in the company of Olympic gold medallists Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy and Shirley Robertson.
