    Just imagine receiving a personalised weather forecast when sailing offshore, a forecast for exactly where you are and where you are going, at a cost of just a few pence per day. Science fiction? No, fact. Weather services for yachtsmen are burgeoning and while some require hugely expensive satellite communication systems and powerful PCs, there are some that offer a personal e-mail service via Iridium or Mini M systems at low cost. Brian Savage tries them out and gives his verdict.

    January 1960 saw the fledgling Daily Express National Boat Show open in ?the great hall? at Earls Court. Entry cost three shillings, a DIY kit for an 18ft 6in Seagull sloop was £300 and the Avon India Rubber Co were exhibiting a three-man rubber dinghy. Forty three years later and it?s the very last Boat Show, now International, to grace these eccentric halls.
