Mitch Booth and Olivier Backes tie for first place on the penultimate day of the regatta

Day four of the Tornado Europeans in Vilamoura, Portugal on 10 May, brought more breeze, with race one getting underway in 12-16 knots. The sea state continued to be rough, causing many capsizes and in some cases gear failure.

American sailors Robbie Daniel/Eric Jacobsen had their best day of the championship so far, winning the first race of day four, from team mates Lars Guck/Jonathan Farrer with Dutch sailors Mitch Booth/Herbert Dercksen in third place. RYA team GBR sailors Hugh Styles/Adam May had the best race out of the Brits, sailing consistently to finish in 10th place and eighth European. Team mates Leigh McMillan/Mark Bulkeley crossed the line in 18th place and 13th European.

There was a change in the race leader yet again in the second race of the day, this time it was the Swedish sailors Martin Strandberg/Kristian Matsson who controlled the race from Dutch sailors Sven Karsenbarg/Mischa Heemskerk, with Santiago Lange/Carlos Espinola of Argentina in third place. Styles/May managed to sail themselves into fourth place but had an incident when they collided with a racing mark and were forced to re-round the mark, they still managed to cross the line in 10th place and sixth European, to move them up into eighth place overall in the European championship. Two places in front of them in the European championship are team mates McMillan/Bulkeley, who are sailing consistently at this regatta, and posted another result inside the top twenty, an 18th place, 12th European. Wilson/Howden are currently lying in 12th place overall with Lovegrove/Sellars in 18th place.

The European championship is evolving into a hard fought battle with both Booth/Dercksen and Backes/Voiron tied on points in first place. Backes/Voiron have a slightly bigger margin of two points clear of Lange/Espinola with Booth/Dercksen one point behind in third place in the open championship.
