Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has finished the Velux 5 Oceans final leg in a commendable 3rd place 4/5/07

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston crossed the Velux 5 Oceans Leg 3 finish line at 11:22:03 local time (10:22 BST, 09:22 UTC) this morning taking third place in the final leg of this round the world race.

Sir Robin at 68 years old completed the circumnavigation in 159 days, 12 hours and 42 minutes at sea – a truly remarkable achievement.

It was clear skies with a band of cloud over the coast as Knox-Johnston sailed in 12-15 knots of breeze with one reef in his mainsail. Knox-Johnston stood on the aft deck of Saga Insurance with his arms raised past the fleet of 25-30 spectator and press boats over the finish line off Gexto, Bilbao.

Once over the line it didn’t take long for Sir Robin to be greeted by his two brothers and his shore team who scrambled onboard Saga Insurance from a RIB.

Unai Basurko on Pakea was only 40 miles off Spain’s coast at 0700 this morning and is expected to arrive in the next few hours.
