Team GBR sailors Christina Bassadone and Katherine Hopson seventh overall

A day of light winds greeted the sailors on the third day of qualifying at the 470 world championships in Zadar, Croatia.

The women’s fleet managed to get one race in before the wind died off preventing a second race from getting underway. A third place overall was enough to push Vesna Deklava and Klara Maucec of Slovenia into the lead by two points from Therese Torgersson and Vendela Zachrisson of Sweden.

Team GBR sailors Christina Bassadone and Katherine Hopson sailed a good race, getting a decent start and, after rounding the windward mark fourteenth after having to do penalty turns, they climbed their way up through the fleet to cross the line in seventh place overall. This result sees them lying in thirteenth place overall going into the final series.

Only one out of the three men’s groups managed to finish a race in the light conditions as two of the groups races were abandoned after a 35 degree wind-shift. The men’s white group saw three British teams in the top five, with Graham Vials and Bevis Field finishing second, Nic Asher and Elliot Willis third and Athens 2004 representatives Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield fifth.

The women’s fleet will begin their gold fleet races today while the men will complete their qualifying series. The event concludes on 16 May.
