Childs win this weekend's open meeting at Grafham

A total of nine boats turned out at Grafham Water SC on May 28-29 for the annual Phantom open meeting.

Saturday saw winds of Force 5-7 and the fleet decided not to play. Only local Rob West braved the conditions, in the first race – but did not survive. Race 3 saw three boats start, Simon Childs launched his new ship, along with Alan Husk and Rob West. A blast for a few laps in up to Force 6 gusts ended with a broken tiller extension for Childs, leaving West to win from Husk.

Sunday dawned the opposite with a patchy Force 1. Andy Shipp from Hunts led Race 4 away never to be headed, Childs followed. Alan Husk took third from Mark Barrett.

Race 5 was again a drifter, Shipp led early on but was caught by Childs on the third beat. These two remained clear Childs winning, fairly comfortably from Shipp. Simon Cowood pinched third from Iain Stowe.

Race 3 started with a big shift on the line. Husk broke clear to lead from Cowood. Childs sneaked through in a patch of breeze, on the 2nd reach, while Stowe came from last to first on the second lap. Childs sneaked back ahead on the run, and held on to win, Stowe was second and Husk was third.
