Scorchio - again

Wednesday 18 August

Wednesday is looking much more hopeful for a sea breeze as the Meltemi wind has now disappeared.

Theyr’s chart predicts a north westerly wind of 3 to 6 knots which will turn into a south west to southerly sea breeze of roughly 7 to 13 knots on the water during the afternoon.

The weather in Athens will be sunny! Temperatures are likely to rise into the early 30s

After the Olympic sailing fell behind schedule yesterday as races were lost due to a lack of breeze, day five of the Olympic Games will see all but two of the Olympic sailing disciplines out on the water.

After a much needed rest day, the Finn and Yngling classes will be back out on the water. Both Ben Ainslie in the Finn class and Shirley Robertson, Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb in the Yngling lead their respective classes and they will be hoping to come off the water in the same position tonight after completing the two races that are scheduled.

Also leading their class are 470 sailors Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield, who have a two point lead going into today’s racing. They will be hoping that the winds blow in their favour today and push them to the front on the fleet. Team mates Christina Bassadone and Katherine Hopson put in a great performance yesterday to move up to fifth place overall and will be looking for a repeat performance today.

The 49er fleet will be keen to get their Olympic regatta underway, after two days of competition they have sailed just one race in light breezes, and these colourful boats will be keen to get their series underway. Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks will be back out in force today fighting hard for medal positions.

The Mistral windsurfing classes have also seen their schedule suffer due to lack of breeze, with the men’s fleet only completing one race so far and the women’s three. Both Nick Dempsey and Natasha Sturges for Great Britain showed good form in the light airs and will be looking to continue this form into today.

Also competing today with be the Laser and the Europe classes. Paul Goodison is in ninth place overall but only eight points away from a bronze medal position and young Europe sailor Laura Baldwin is currently lying in 20th place.
