Bernard Stamm leads the Velux 5 Oceans Race by over 200 miles and Alex Thomson rejoins race 26/10/06

Bernard Stamm aboard Cheminees Poujoulat continues to lead the Velux 5 Oceans race heading south, parallel to the coast of Portugal. In the latest report sent at 0700 this morning he is reaching at 11 knots, 240 miles off Cape St Vincent and should pass the same latitude as the Straits of Gibralta later today.

Almost directly north of Stamm, Japanese skipper, Kojiro Shiraishi, trails by 219 miles on Spirit of Yukoh, but has held onto the leader since turning south off the wind from a south-west track late last night.

Alex Thomson and Hugo Boss restarted racing from the port of Gijon, Northern Spain, at 1822 last night. As Thomson predicted, it has been a slow restart: the black boat is making just 2.3 knots 20 miles offshore heading north-west.
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston arrived in La Coruna last night with damaged Open 60, SAGA Insurance, and fellow British yachtsman, Mike Golding, will restart racing from the same port this afternoon with Ecover .
