Pete Goss and Paul Larsen sailing the Seacart 30 trimaran Cornwall Playing for Success arrived at Kinsale at 1059 on Monday morning completing the first leg of the Shetland Round Britain and Ireland Race.

Goss and Larsen have established a considerable lead over rest of the fleet with the second boat – Alacrity – sailed by Rex Conn and Etiene Giroire arriving seven hours later.

Waverider (Nigel Passmore and Angus McPhie) crossed the line third but were displaced into fourth place on corrected time by Nick Bubb and Pete Cumming on Kenmore who finished 20 minutes later.

The race which started in ideal conditions with a southerly 10-knot breeze and bright sunshine at midday on Sunday soon established a lead and were first out of Plymouth Sound. They strengthened their lead as they rounded Eddystone Lighthouse due to a favourable wind shift that trapped the rest of the fleet.

As evening drew in on Sunday night Goss and Larsen went close inshore to find wind. Dropping their sails, they literally paddled the boat around the breaking overfalls off the Lizard before picking up the next breeze and heading toward the Scilly Isles.

The wind favoured Cornwall Playing for Success again as they passed Bishop Rock, veering to the South West and allowing the crew to commence their reach across to Southern Ireland to Kinsale.
