The 'Chilly Willies' New Year Day race at Wilsonian SC lives up to its name 3/1/07

Clear blue skies helped to attract many competitors from the comfort of their beds for the ‘Chilly Willies’ New Year day race at Wilsonian Sailing Club. Unfortunately however, the fresh to strong westerly breeze dampened their enthusiasm and just 14 boats ventured out.

A lapping course was set within sight of those watching events from the shelter of the dinghy-park and clubhouse. Ian Foxwell/Hannah Packman (29er) got away to a good start and were first to round the windward mark but then discovered a problem with their spinnaker and were unable to hoist it, so although they held the lead over the three rounds were relegated to runners-up spot on corrected time.

Stuart Bailey/Zoe Noble (Buzz) chased after the leaders but suffered a dip on the second round and had to settle for fourth prize, while Doug Horner/Caroline Alexander (RS 500) made a good recovery after a poor start to win on adjusted time with Phil Harris/John Bradbury in the other RS 500 securing third prize.

Thomas Lambert/Nicola Smith (Laser 3000) managed to keep ahead of David Fenech/Alison Williams (Laser II) to the line to be rewarded with the fifth prize.
