After yesterday’s canceled races, today’s conditions took their toll on the boats. Matthew Sheahan reports

You could almost feel the Emirates Team New Zealand shore crew wince today. First, a collision between Team Origin and the French Aleph team put a hole in the bow of one boat and a crack in the stern on the other. Then came a fluffed kite hoist aboard Artemis in their match against Azzura which saw the spinnaker pole on the Swedish boat wrap itself around the windward cap shrouds with the inevitable result shortly before their spinnaker disappeared under the boat. The crash was an unforced error on the part of the Swedish team who were leading the race comfortably at that stage, but were soon forced to retire as they struggled to untangle the mess.

The 45 strong team that is in charge of maintaining the two Kiwi boats throughout an event that will see more than 50 races run over the course of two weeks, could see that it would be a busy long night.

The collision between the Brits and the French resulted in a penalty imposed on Aleph by the umpires. By the finish, the French team were flying a protest flag but after a hearing ashore the result was to stand, leaving the French with a loss and a point deducted for the collision. With the event relying on just two boats, (although a spare is available in the Oracle boat), collisions are actively discouraged by the organisers.

In the match between All4One and Emirates Team New Zealand, the Kiwis continued their dominant performance by posting their fourth victory in a row.

In the last match of the day between Mascalzone Latino Audi Team  and Synergy Russian Sailing Team, Gavin Brady steered the Italians to a comfortable win over the Russians.

Tomorrow’s (Sunday) forecast suggests that the breeze will be a little lighter than today’s blustery conditions.
