The inaugural Challenge Business Round Britain Challenge Race
organised in association with the Daily Telegraph, starts
on Saturday 19 April at 1300 from the Royal Yacht Squadron
line, 16 identical 72ft steel-hulled yachts each carrying
one professional skipper and mate and 16 crew made up of crew
volunteers will race non-stop round the coast line of Britain
and Ireland in a clockwise direction.
The
race, which is likely to take between 10-12 days will see
the fleet cross the start line and head west towards the Scilly
Isles before heading for their first waypoint which has been
included to keep the fleet a safe distance off the west coast
of Ireland. They’ll then head towards St Kilda where
crews are likely to experience strong winds and bigs seas
building from the Atlantic.
The
fleet will then continue north-east towards the northern tip
of the Shetland Islands before heading south down the east
coast. Here they’ll have to navigate through sand banks
and the oil rigs of the North Sea before the East Anglian
approach where strong tides will provide yet more tactical
challenges. The final waypoint is just off Dover before heading
west along the Channel towards the finish line at Cowes.
