A new Atlantic
Monaco Yacht Show is more about what's coming next than what's afloat today and one of the more interesting snippets came from a Dutchman who tells me that Ed Kastelein is building a replica of Atlantic, the 1903 three-masted schooner in which Charlie Barr crossed to Atlantic in a race in 1905 to take the Emperor's Cup. He not only won the race but set a record of 13 days 10 hours and 15 mins which wasn't bettered for almost a century. Ed Kastelein has already built Zaca a te Moana, and the fantastic schooner Eleonora, a replica of the Nat Herreshoff designed schooner Westward. The remarkable thing is that Ed Kastelein builds the yachts himself having had someone fabricate the hull. If ever there was someone passionate about famous classic yachts it must be Ed and when Atlantic is launched he must surely be in line for some sort of award. Watch this space…
