This is my new favourite mid-layer jacket. The Musto Women’s Evolution Primaloft Jacket is warm, but incredibly light. It is filled with PrimaLoft, a patented synthetic microfibre that has almost magic thermal properties for its weight and is effective even when wet.

This is quite an expensive bit of kit for a short jacket with minimal features (it has just two hand pockets), but it is one of the most versatile items of sailing clothing I own. It is doubly welcome in other environments because it is so much lighter to carry than most other mid-layer jackets – only 260g.

The jacket also packs down to a very small size and the right side hand pocket is slightly larger so it can be used as a mini stuff sack. It is also water-resistant and windproof.

Put all those advantages together and you have a layer that is a far more comfortable than a conventional jacket or fleece and, to my mind, a far better replacement. This is also a good women’s fit. I’ve no doubt the men’s version is equally good.

Verdict

Not cheap, but light, warm, easily packed and versatile.
