Sail for Gold Underway – Day 1 Review
- Tue, 7 Jun 2011
A slow start to racing when the weather refused to play ball for the morning meant that all classes other than the womens' match racing in the Elliott 8m were postponed. But by mid afternoon the gradient breeze kicked in from the south west to provide good racing for all classes, albeit late in the day.
While frustrating for the organisers, the delayed start to proceedings proved that when it comes to match racing in the light Elliott 8m sports boats, five knots of breeze is still sufficient to provide some exciting tactical racing in the womens' fleet.
Out on the water in the commentary boat we took an early look at some of the action in the 49er, Star, Finn and 470 fleets and while it's too early to draw to many conclusions as to who might make the medal races at the end of the week, it was clear to see that some of the big names mean business.
And talking of big names the chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, Lord Sebastien Coe turned up at Weymouth to take a look at the site that will host the Games next year.
In the first of our regular podcasts from the event you can hear his views on the venue, the progress to the 2012 Games and what this all means for Weymouth.
