Sir Robin Knox-Johnston will be arriving in Gosport today on his new Open 60 26/5/06

Sailing legend, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston will be arriving in Gosport today, Friday 26 May, onboard his new boat – the Finot-design, Open 60 racing yacht formerly known as Fila.

The boat will undergo a number of improvements over the coming months to prepare her for the start of the VELUX 5 OCEANS race, starting on 22 October 2006 from Bilbao.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston recently announced that he is to make a dramatic return to ocean racing in the VELUX 5 OCEANS, formerly known as the Around Alone. Every four years sailors set out on this ultimate solo challenge to sail 30,000 miles around the world leaving from Bilbao, Spain with stopovers in Fremantle, Western Australia and Norfolk, USA.

In 1969 Sir Robin became the first person to sail non-stop around the planet when he won the legendary Sunday Times Golden Globe on board his yacht Suhaili. Back then, his record-breaking circumnavigation took a monumental 313 days.

This time Sir Robin, 67 years old, will compete in his new state-of-the-art yacht, hoping to complete the 30,000 mile course in around 112 days taking 200 days off his 1969 record.
