The Italian and Croatian coastguards continue to assist Oman Sail with the search and rescue operation for Mohammed al Alawi, a 26-year old crewember of the MOD70 Musandam-Oman Sail.

A team statement said French skipper Sidney Gavignet reported a man overboard whilst sailing just south of Pula in Croatia at 5.05am Central European Time on Wednesday 7 October.

“Mohammad’s family has been notified and Oman Sail team members are with them and supporting them through this uncertain time. An update on the situation will be sent once we have more information” read the statement.

A combined operation between Oman Sail and the Italian and Croatian coastguards searched the area throughout the day on Wednesday but by nightfall they were unable to find Mohammed. The coastguards and Oman Sail resumed the search this morning.

Wind speed at the time of the incident was 15-17 knots.

Musandam was in the Adriatic Sea on its way to the Barcolana Regatta in Trieste, Italy where it was due to race this weekend, before competing in the 2015 Rolex Middle Sea Race which begins in Malta later this month.
