Two firsts and two fourths keeps Polish sailor, Katarzyna Szotynski, at the top of the leader board at the Laser Radial Women’s World Championship

Katarzyna Szotynski from Poland retained her overall lead in the Laser Radial Women’s World Championship, scoring a first and a fourth yesterday. Her results matched her first day even though the conditions were significantly different with an offshore wind of 9-12 knots oscillating through 40 degrees. She was unconcerned about the change in wind direction saying, “The only important thing is to have some sun!”

In the men’s fleet Karlo Krpeljevic CRO has taken a clear lead scoring a ninth and a first while his compatriot and overnight joint leader, Tonko Kuzmanic suffered a 24th in the first race of the day which, before a discard, drops him down to eighth overall. Their coach, Edo Smoljenovic, said, “It is still a long way to go. My sailors prefer stronger winds.” Together with his colleague Jozo Jakelic they have achieved considerable success with their young sailors. Apart from the Laser Radial World Championship their sailors are currently leading the Laser 4.7 world Championship in Holland and are lying third in the singlehanded male class at the ISAF World Youth Championship. Their policy of working their sailors through Laser 4.7, Laser Radial and then to the Laser Standard is certainly paying dividends and could well produce a medal at the next Olympics. Eduardo Cordero from Venezuela moves up from 13th to the runner up position after a first and a fourth place while the best results of the day went to Orkun Soyer from Turkey who scored a near perfect second and first.
