Come and greet her when she arrives in Plymouth on Monday 28 May

Plymouth is going back to the 1960s this bank holiday weekend in tribute to Gipsy Moth IV’s homecoming. On Monday 28 May, a giant entertainment stage and 40 square-metre screen will be broadcasting archive footage like this of Chichester’s 1967 arrival as well as live coverage of Gipsy Moth sailing into view in Plymouth Sound. Our sister magazine Yachting Monthly conceived and spearheaded a campaign to rescue the 53ft ketch from rotting in her ‘tomb’ alongside the Cutty Sark at Greenwich. She was restored by Camper & Nicholsons her original builders, at their Gosport yard. Almost 1 million pounds has been raised to restore the yacht, send her round the world on her second circumnavigation and keep her in commission as a traditional training vessel at Cowes. Visitors to the city are being invited to dust off their flares and hippie gear and turn up in 1960s fancy dress to give the boat a massive Bank Holiday Monday welcome home. Award-winning tribute band The Fab Beatles will be playing two 40-minute sets, one set in pre-1967 ‘mop top’ costume and the other in Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road outfits. Entertainment starts at 1230hrs on Plymouth Hoe and finishes at around 1800 hrs – see below for full listings.
