Lake Ullswater provided a scenic backdrop to the travelling 9er circus who were joined by the ever growing Musto Skiff fleet at last weekend’s open meeting.

The 49er fleet were off first providing a battle between the home team of Lester and Lee Noble and Jonny Coates and Charlie Muir. Jonny and Charlie showed they were quickly on the pace by leading round the first windward mark in all four races but the Noble team proved there was no substitute for time spent acquiring the ‘knowledge’, using the ‘occasional’ windshift to consistently break the finishing tape. Brand-new team Matty and James Lyons slotted into third overall to demonstrate that regular weekend racing amongst the six strong 49er Ullswater fleet is paying dividends.

The 29er fleet produced another two-boat dogfight between GBR 9, James Stewardson and Tom Morris, and yet another Noble pairing, Anne and Julia, in the suitably named orange boat, Nemo. Although both list Ullswater as their home club, national squad duties allow James and Tom little time to practise on local turf. Nevertheless the results couldn’t have being closer with both teams recording two firsts and two seconds, but Team Nemo took the victory spoils by securing the last race. Mature pairing Clive Telford and Jonathan Heginbotham’s consistent results won out over the remaining young guns to stand upon the remaining podium place.
