Sixty of the world's finest supersailing yachts descend on Palma for the Superyacht Cup Ulysse Nardin 3/6/07

With less than two weeks to go to the start of the Superyacht Cup Ulysse Nardin (16-19 June) participants are preparing for the big gathering in Palma, Majorca. With up to 60 yachts racing, all measuring more than 27m overall, the event promises to be one of the most spectacular gatherings of large, modern sailing yachts ever seen.

Designed to slot between the end of the Louis Vuitton Challenger series for the America’s Cup in Valencia (currently standing at 2-0 to Emirates Team New Zealand over Luna Rossa) and the Match itself on 23 June, the Superyacht Cup will herald a mass arrival of superailing yachts on the Spanish mainland.

In Palma, the fleet will be split into two classes in order to best match similarly-performing yachts. Although the eclectic fleet represents a big variation in size and design, it is anticipated that the sailing will be close thanks to the carefully designed pursuit style racing system. Of the 55 yachts currently entered, there will be several natural matchings of yachts eager to show just how good they are.

With building yards, designers and stylists, to say nothing of owners, captains and crew from around the globe represented the event will also become a massive networking-fest for all those in the supersailing world.

The two J-class yachts, Velsheda (39.5m) and Ranger (41.2m), will continue their on-the-water battle, as will the racing maxis Alfa Romeo (30m) and Wild Oats (30m). Two of the Royal Huisman yachts, the brand new Meteor and Borkumriff IV (both 50m) will be evenly matched for an exciting first outing against each other. There will also be the Wallys Dark Shadow (30m) and Magic Carpet (29m) and the Dubois boats Janice of Wyoming (39m) and Kokomo of London (40m) who will be having their own private duels as well as competing against the rest of the fleet. Amongst the Perinis, Perseus (49.8) and Klosters (45.4) will be demonstrating their power and prowess.

The Superyacht Cup incorporating The New Zealand Millennium Cup is expecting up to 60 yachts from 27m to over 80m length overall. It will be held at Dique del Oeste in Palma. Check out www.thesuperyachtcup.com
