Lucy Magregor’s team scores 1:1 against Russians keeping hopes alive on first day of match racing

Today was quarter finals day and the start of the knockout phase of the womens’ match racing. For the British girls led by Lucy Macgregor, the next stage towards a medal involved beating the Russians led by Ekaterina Skudina.

Victory will go to the first team to three wins out of five and for British supporters it didn’t go well.
Despite leading the Russians the Brits appeared to lose pace on the downwind leg although the shifty and gusty conditions could have been to blame. Macgregor lost the match.

In the second race the British girls defended a narrow lead through skilful close quarters boat handing.

On the second and final downwind leg Magregor tripped up and wrapped their kite in a gybe, nervous moments, but they recovered brilliantly to lead into the finish, winning by half a boat length.
Racing continues tomorrow.
