One week to go before Ranger, Lionheart and Velsheda compete at the first of their UK appearances this year

Final preparations are now being made for the J Class Regatta hosted by Royal Cornwall Yacht Club Events Limited from 23 – 27 June 2015. Lionheart, Velsheda and Ranger, the winner of the 2012 J Class Falmouth Regatta, are all moored at Pendennis Marina.

Pendennis has doubled the width of its pontoons to accommodate the additional equipment and enormous sails carried by the majestic Js.

For the first time, the J Class Falmouth Regatta will benefit from on the water umpiring. International Judge Alfredo Ricci, will be on the water each day to issue immediate penalties for any rule infringements. In another first, the J Class will not have other jury members present in Falmouth, but their services will be called upon if required by Skype.

Robin Taylor, Royal Cornwall Yacht Club Events said: “Getting a jury of world-class experts together in one place is often difficult, and thanks to Cornwall’s new super fast broadband, we are now able to facilitate a jury hearing across the world over Skype. High speed broadband was introduced in Cornwall to enhance local businesses and support international events such as the J Class Regatta coming to Cornwall.”

Louise Morton, Secretary of the J Class, commented: The J Class Association is now putting the final touches to the 2015 J Class Falmouth Regatta. We are looking forward to a great regatta and will be providing information on good viewing vantage points for the many people that want to see the magnificent Js race.”

The J Class Association and Royal Cornwall YC have also arranged special trips out on two days to view the regatta for up to 80 local children and their carers and support workers. They will get as close as possible to the boats to experience the power and elegance of the Js while listening to the on the water commentary provided by Donal O’Halloran. Members of the RCYC will also be on board to help out on the day.
