The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, then at Land's End, bore the brunt of the early stages of the disaster and progressively Nimrod aircraft from Kinloss, helicopters from Culdrose, Chivenor and Brawdy and eight military vessels became involved. Six commercial vessels, including four trawlers, came to help and numerous lifeboats from UK and Irish ports were at sea for long periods right from the start.
