American sailor plans to complete his circumnavigation in a lightweight 40-footer

You may not have heard of him – I hadn’t – but US sailor James Burwick will be leaving New Zealand in November on the second leg of his ambitious solo circumnavigation in an Open 40.

The 53-year-old set sail from Bermuda in January and has been holed up in New Zealand watiting for the next Southern Ocean spring to cross the Pacific and round Cape Horn. He is aiming to return to Cape Town.

His boat Anasazi is a Groupe Finot 40, the same boat Japanese sailor Kojiro Shiraishi raced in the 2003 Around Alone, and not surprisingly Burwick had some pretty hairy conditions between Cape Town and Fremantle.
