Footage of Chichester's welcome home 40 years ago looks quirky now

 

If you’re quick you can see the archive footage the BBC is showing here of Francis Chichester’s arrival back home 40 years ago, on 28 May 1967.

It’s an interesting piece of social history. The entire welcoming party is in uniform. The Mayor of Plymouth, in full fig, gives a welcome speech but no-one invites Chichester to speak; he listens with a quite unmilitary hand on his hip and is then firmly led to a waiting car. No euphoria. No sponsors’ banners. No Davina.
